We recently had a cookout and I decided to get domestic and make my own hamburger buns. I have a bread recipe that I have used for years so I decided to use that recipe.
Ingredients:
6-6 1/2 cups flour
2 teaspoons salt
1/2 cup butter (softened)
1/2 cup sugar
2 packages active dry yeast
1 egg
2 tablespoons oil
In large bowl, combine 2 1/4 cups flour, sugar, salt and yeast. Add butter and mix on low speed. Pour in 2 cups hot tap water, add egg and mix on medium speed 2 minutes. Beat in 3/4 cup flour or enough for thick batter. With spoon, stir in enough additional flour to make soft dough. Turn on floured board, kneed 2 minutes. Shape in ball and place in greased bowl, turn over, cover with a towel. Let rise 1 1/2 hours. Punch down, roll balls about 2 inches in diameter. Place on cookie sheet at least 2 inches apart and press slightly with the palm of your hand to flatten (only a little). Allow buns to rise another hour. Preheat oven to 425 and bake 15-20 minutes or until golden brown. After the buns are cooked allow to cool completely then using a bread knife or electric knife cut in half to form top and bottom buns.
I am planning on trying out hot dog buns using a similar technique.... stay tuned!
